April Birchbox Review - My Fist Birchbox!

I was beyond excited to receive my first Birchbox.  I wasn't too sure about all of these monthly sample subscriptions at first and by the time I decided that I wanted in, they all had waiting lists!  From all of the reviews online, I thought Birchbox looked like the best one for me to try first.  I think I was on the waiting list for 3 months before receiving my "invitation" to join.

So, yeah, we have all seen this box... My April box arrived on April 30th! I think (hope) it was so late because it is my first box.  I assumed that by joining in April that my first box would be the May box so this was actually a pleasant surprise :)

Natural Wonders: April 2012

Pretty green packaging to fit the "green" theme :)

Benta Berry: G-1 Exfoliating Facial Cleanser - 3ml - I have not heard of this brand before.  One of my reasons for joining Birchbox was to try new things so I was excited to see this included.  The scent is really nice, very fresh and fruity.  After using it my boyfriend told me I smelled nice and when I told him why, he wouldn't stop sniffing my face, lol.  But, the scent is really just a nice bonus. How does it perform? It is a very gentle, exfoliating, creamy, gel cleanser.  The exfoliating bits are ground apricot seeds and very sparse.  I would like this cleanser more if there were more exfoliating bits, but my skin did feel really soft and smooth afterwards. This cleanser claims to help regulate the skin's oil production.  I only got 2 uses from this sample, so I can't speak to that.  My skin tends to get a bit more oily in the Summer so I may purchase the full size and work it into my summer skin care routine. The directions say to use 2-3 times per week but I think it feels gentle enough for daily use. - Full Size 30ml $16

Weleda: Pomegranate Firming Day Cream - 7ml - This is another brand I was not familiar with.  During application it has a light pomegranate scent, but it doesn't linger afterward. It has a very thin consistency and is easily absorbed into the skin.  It felt very moisturizing but it didn't leave me looking shiny, just a subtle glow that brightened up my complexion.  On some Summer days I don't wear foundation and I would feel comfortable using this alone.  It also plays nice with foundation; my makeup applied over it easily.  The only negative thing about this product for me is that it does not have an SPF.  It is so lightweight and really would be the perfect summer moisturizer for me if only it also had SPF! I won't be buying it now, but I may check it out again in the winter when the SPF in my foundation is enough for me. - Full Size 30ml $33

Wonderstruck by Taylor Swift - .04 fl.oz. vial - It is very sweet. I like sweet scents, but this was just a bit too sweet for me. I think this would be better for a young girl, maybe?  I will use up the sample, but won't buy the full size. - Full Size 3.4 oz. $59.50

Pangea Organics: Lip Balm - Fragrance: Egyptian Fennel with Grapefruit & Sweet Orange - .25 oz.  - Just what I needed, anther lip balm to fall in love with!  The fennel scared me a bit, but it was not noticeable.  It had a crisp, fresh grapefruit and orange scent initially, but the scent quickly faded after application.  The formula is very moisturizing and gives my lips a nice sheen, but nothing too shiny.  It is organic, gluten-free and the tube is huge! This is a full size so I may pick up a full size in another scent.  Italian Red Mandarin with Rose perhaps? I definitely recommend trying this out! - Full Size .25 oz. $12

Pangea Organics: Facial Scrub - Egyptian Geranium with Adzuki Bean & Cranberry for all skin types - .17 fl.oz.  - This sample was considered a "Beauty Extra" not one of the Deluxe samples.  It was a one time use and I really enjoyed it.  Well, I didn't enjoy using it as much as I enjoyed how my skin felt after I did.  I did not care for the texture of the scrub on my face... or maybe it just takes getting used to.  It really is hard to get a full opinion of a product after just one use! It felt very gentle on my skin, almost like scrubbing with a thinner, lumpy mud mask.  There are no harsh, scrubby bits.  I guess I am just used to gritty scrubs that you really feel working so at the time I thought it was not going to be very effective.  It has an earthy scent with a bit of cranberry.  Not great,  but not bad and when a product works I don't really care what it smells like.  Once I rinsed the scrub off I couldn't believe how smooth and soft my skin felt.  It uses food based enzymes (from cranberry seeds) along with manual exfoliants (ground adzuki beans) and I think that is what makes this very gentle feeling scrub so effective. It is gentle enough for every day use, but if I purchase it I will probably only use it 1-2 times a week.  I am not in need of another scrub right now so I'm not rushing out to buy it, but I probably will give the full size a try in the future.  - Full Size 3.8 fl.oz. $32

Pangea Organics: Eye Cream - Turkish Rose & White Tea - .03 fl.oz.  - This is another sample that was considered a "Beauty Extra." It has a very subtle rose scent.  The texture is exactly what I look for in an eye cream, not too thick, not too thin.  It took a bit of patting to work it into my skin and once absorbed there was a slight tightening feeling.  I liked this eye cream, but I don't have an issue with fine lines around my eyes so for $55 I won't be purchasing this one. - Full Size .34 fl.oz. $55

Overall, I was very impressed with my first Birchbox.  I will definitely repurchase the Pangea Organics Lip Balm and I will probably repurchase both of the face scrubs when the scrubs I am using now run out.  And even though I probably won't repurchase the other items in the box, I still enjoyed using the products.  There wasn't a single product included that I didn't like.

I know everyone gets different samples in their Birchbox, and it is fun to see what everyone got, but I thought I would try the products before sharing it so I could give you reviews, too.  Do you like reading the product reviews or do you really just want to see the photos?
